What Is Communication?

The world of communication is vast, dynamic, and stimulating. First, communication is a professional field: most organizations, whether nonprofit, private companies, or public institutions, have communications teams. These teams include advisors, agents, and project managers who oversee all communication needs: managing social media, blogs, newsletters, internal communications, and more. Careers in communication are both stimulating and creative.

Second, communication is also a field of academic research, which is why our department is called Communication Studies (sciences de la communication), a term you'll become familiar with throughout your university journey. You'll explore several subfields of communication studies:

  • traditional and digital media (radio, television, social media)
  • discourse analysis and rhetoric
  • infographics and photography
  • political communication
  • public relations
  • organizational communication
  • non-verbal communication
  • international and intercultural communication
  • media history
  • communication theory
  • health and science communication, among others

Discovering Communication Studies

By joining one of our undergraduate programs in Communication Studies, you will:

  • Better understand the role of digital media in social interactions and organizational communications
  • Critically reflect on the ethical, social, and political issues surrounding communication in organizations
  • Develop skills in creative written and oral communication, strong analytical and synthesis abilities, and the capacity to interpret a wide range of information

Choose one of our Communication Studies programs to explore these aspects (and many more) that will prepare you for a successful career in the field.
